Kinematics and evolution of the southern Eastern California Shear Zone, based on analysis of fault strike, distribution, activity, roughness, and secondary deformation

Abstract The Eastern California shear zone is a complex set of dextral faults that accommodates significant plate motion and has produced large earthquakes. evolution this system why it consists closely spaced, irregular fail in multi‐fault ruptures are not well understood. Here we analyze the geometry, spatial distribution, Quaternary slip activity right‐lateral southern Mojave block. We find these oriented favorably for accommodating regional do show evidence replacement following counterclockwise rotation to unfavorable positions, although may be migrating westward as previously proposed. also confirm transpressive, with widespread restraining bends, distributed convergent deformation, impact on near‐fault topography. Observations geometrically complex, represented by along‐strike variability fault strike. document correlation between strike (slip rate or net slip), which evident within control group other faults. suggest represents form geometric roughness, inhibit result ruptures, slip‐strengthening behavior, prevalence off‐fault deformation. Other factors, including preexisting crustal fabric, edge effects, changes stress field, further complicate kinematics.
